In about AD400 this fragment of a gaming board was
thrown into a bog in Vimose, Denmark, as part of a war
booty offering to the gods. It most likely came from
Romanised Germans, and may not be a tafl board at all,
but perhaps one for the Roman game ludus latrunculorum,
"the game of little soldiers".

Then in about AD500 a pair of golden drinking horns
was made by Hlegawastir, sone of Holte. for some
unknown purpose. They were richly decorated, and
among the engraved scenes were these two men playing a
board game. It may be tafl, but at this early date
the evidence is lacking.
