The aim of the attacking player is to form an enclosure
like the one shown in the diagram. Unless the black
player makes a mistake, there is no way for the white
player to break through and escape. White would
normally resign at this point, but if not, black would
gradually close in, capturing pieces where possible with
moves like F9-F8 taking the white piece on E8.
Eventually the king will be alone, or his defenders will
be trapped in a position where they are unable to
protect him, and the final capture can be made. In some
games, if a player has no legal move, a draw results.
Black in such games must be careful not to force a
position of stalemate here, where white is completely
trapped and has no move. The next page discusses
